Supporter, Contact Person
or Guarantor (Japanese)
Japanese Law requires a foreign student to be sponsored by a supporter.
In addition KLS would like a student, if possible to also have a guarantor.
A guarantor and a supporter, can often be one individual; but, it
is possible to have two different individuals.
A supporter is responsible for a student's financial obligations.
A supporter can be a qualified Japanese or non-Japanese living in
Japan, parents or relatives not living in Japan; or, an applicant
can act as their own supporter.
An applicant who does not live in Japan needs a contact person living in
Japan. A contact person is needed to receive all materials from the
applicant and to come to the school for the completion of all application
requirements. A contact person needs to be able to understand basic
Japanese.
In some cases, an applicant will also need to find a guarantor. Please ask
the office if you will need to find a guarantor.
A guarantor is responsible for all other aspects of a student's stay
in Japan. Although it is possible to be a supporter oneself, in all
cases, a guarantor is needed and must be a qualified Japanese or non-Japanese
living in Japan.
Guarantor Qualifications
The guarantor normally must be a Japanese citizen residing and working
in Tokyo or in one of the neighboring prefectures.
Under special circumstances the guarantor may be a foreign national
having or qualified to have a permanent resident visa.
The Guarantor
The guarantor is expected to play an important role in a student's
life in Japan, from the application and immigration process till school
registration, virtually acting as the student's guardian in both public
and personal matters. It is of prime importance that an appropriate
person whom the applicant can trust be appointed as a guarantor.
